Upgrade pieces can be found in daily chests, from Merchant Ships, feeding Pets, Wildlife, Seal Dives, and the Magical Tower.
Waterwheel Paddles and Crates can be traded for at the Great Crate Islet. Treehouse Stilts and Treehouse Stairs can be traded for at the Steppin' Stairs Islet.

Since game version 2.5 (May 2017), the maximum capacity using upgrade pieces is 1,010 storage slots. This was increased on Sept 7th 2018 to 2,530 (25x 10 slot upgrades on top of the original 30 slots).
Since game version 3.0 (Sep 2017), with all slots rewarded for levelling up (for a beginner starting the game with version 3.0) the maximum capacity is 2,860.
Since game version 3.6 (Sep 2018), with all slots rewarded for levelling up (for a beginner starting the game with version 3.6) the maximum capacity is 2,985.
Since Sept 7th 2018, with all slots rewarded for levelling up, the maximum capacity is now 4,505.
And with additional storage slots rewarded for Seal Dives, TradeFest Bonus Tiers and Wishing Wellspring Island Wish of Wisdom or Fate... there is virtually no limit!
